Secretary of State Marco Rubio was a one-time Trump critic turned ally.
Rubio is the GOP establishment’s hope for 2028.
And now Marco Rubio faced one massive choice, and his decision is too important to ignore.
Rubio Opposes Trump’s Iran Peace Deal
President Trump made it clear from the outset of the war with Iran that his only goal was to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Trump also reassured Americans that he wasn’t plunging the nation into another forever war in the Middle East.
The President checked both of those boxes when he announced a deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, end the conflict, and set the terms for Iran to dismantle its nuclear program.
But the swamp spent decades pining for this war and wasn’t about to throw in the towel on their dreams of a regime change war in Iran.
The Israeli news outlet Hoyam reported that the Deep State tried to tank the deal by feeding Trump intelligence that Iran would never live up to their end of the bargain.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Rubio agreed and pushed to keep the war going, whereas Vice President JD Vance and Trump’s two envoys, son-in-law Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, favored a deal.
“CIA Director John Ratcliffe told President Trump and other senior officials that intelligence gathered by U.S. intelligence agencies raised serious doubts about Iran’s willingness to make the nuclear concessions the U.S. is seeking in any final deal, according to three sources familiar with those discussions.
Friction point: Ratcliffe isn’t the only skeptic in Trump’s top team. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth have both expressed concerns and raised questions about the deal in internal discussions, while Vice President Vance and U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner advocated for it,” Hoyam reported two U.S. sources saying.
Will Trump Clean House?
President Trump supports the deal, and his voice is the most important.
Trump also views a Middle East peace deal as a singular legacy achievement.
Hoyam reported that Hegseth and CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s jobs may be on the chopping block over their vocal opposition to Trump’s deal.
“US President Donald Trump is considering dismissing a series of senior administration officials who opposed the agreement with Iran, including War Secretary Pete Hegseth and CIA Director John Ratcliffe,” Hoyam reported.
“The debate has been settled. Anyone who opposed it could pay a personal price,” Hoyam reported a U.S. source saying.
Rubio’s job is safe, however, as he avoided the pushback against Trump’s deal and kept his opposition to himself.
“The person who, for the time being, appears to be enjoying immunity is Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Among other things, he has been very careful not to criticize the agreement and also enjoys considerable popularity,” Hoyam also reported.
Trump keeps hinting that he would like to see a Vance-Rubio ticket in 2028.
And Rubio surmised that his best play was to sit on the sidelines of this fight since he knew he wasn’t going to be able to change Trump’s mind.
