The home stretch for the midterm election is nearly here.
Both parties are confronting the same political reality.
And Fox News cited one poll result that is a nightmare for Donald Trump.
Poll Numbers on the War With Iran
Former CIA Director and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is one of the neoconservatives itching for President Trump to commit America to a protected regime change war with Iran.
Trump merely sought to end Iran’s nuclear program and declare victory, as Trump knows Americans have no appetite for another forever war.
Fox News host Gillian Turner drove that point home in an interview with Pompeo when she cited poll numbers showing 63% of Americans disapprove of the war and just 25% approve.
Americans soured on the war after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and gas skyrocketed to over $4 a gallon.
Pompeo conceded that point.
“Yeah, a pretty stark contrast for sure, and I understand the concerns of the American people; I don’t diminish them or take them at all lightly,” Pompeo began.
Pompeo then argued that this war with Iran was inevitable and that Trump was right to take on the challenge.
“But I do remind everyone, we had deferred this risk for an awfully long time. We had so many Americans killed in the Middle East for so many years. The Iranians have been trying to destroy Israel and United States for decades, and no president was willing to take on this incredibly important challenge, to get to them before they had a nuclear weapon that could threaten the United States of America.
Pompeo’s Bad Comparison
Neoconservatives like Pompeo think Americans should just suck it up on the gas prices and bear it for as long as they have so he can accomplish the goal of regime change, an objective Trump never committed to in the first place.
To make his point, Pompeo tried comparing the Iran War to World War 2.
“So, I get that gasoline prices are higher, and that’s difficult for lots of Americans. I don’t take that lightly. But make no mistake about it, we’ve seen this before. In World War II, the polling was really bad before victory. And we had a lot of hard days then as well. The American people understand America’s interests.
And I think over time as President Trump is able to demonstrate his continued resolve and the effectiveness of our effort, the American people will be rewarded, and our military will be rewarded for all the sacrifice that they and our military have made,” Pompeo stated.
Turner interjected, reminding Pompeo that this conflict was nothing like World War 2.
““Well, the current conflict is hardly comparable to World War II, but your point, sir, is well-taken,” Turner stated. ” We’ve got to leave it there.”
That enraged Pompeo.
“No, it’s actually, Gillian, it’s actually comparable,” Pompeo ranted. “They’re trying to take down Western civilization — the Iranians, the Chinese, and the Russians — all of them. And, you’re right, the conflict isn’t at that scale yet only because President Trump has determinedly taken that on before they could work together to diminish our capabilities all around the world.”
Neoconservatives are pushing the World War 2 comparison because that was the last time America fought a war where unconditional surrender was the goal.
Unless Americans see the war with Iran as the equivalent of World War 2, they won’t back the neoconservative push for an endless regime change war with Iran.
