California Governor Gavin Newsom just handed Republicans a gift they didn’t have to ask for.
He sat down with PBS NewsHour and said the quiet part loud about where the Democrat Party is actually headed.
And what he admitted about the Democratic Socialists of America and the Democrat platform should have every working American paying attention.
What Newsom Actually Said
PBS NewsHour co-host Amna Nawaz put the question to Newsom directly, noting the wave of DSA-aligned primary victories across the country and asking whether those ideas should be folded into the broader Democrat platform.
Newsom didn’t dodge. “I think they are,” he said.
He ticked through a list. Money out of politics. Universal healthcare. Moving off fossil fuels entirely. And then he said something that should stop any honest person cold: “I believe in universal healthcare, and I believe in Medicare for All. The party does overwhelmingly, you poll people in the party.”
When Nawaz pushed back and noted there seems to be “a little distance between some leadership and those DSA candidates,” Newsom cut her off. “But not the ideas,” he said.
He went further on energy. “It’s about recognizing that we’ve got a planet that is getting hotter and drier, and that we’ve got to address the issue of climate change, and we want energy security, and we want to move off fossil fuels. That’s a DSA position. That’s a mainstream position within the Democratic Party.”
And when pressed on whether the socialist label itself should concern Democrats, Newsom waved it off. “I think in many ways, it’s just a label,” he said, adding that the party calls those same people progressives.
So there it is. The governor of the largest state in the country, a man widely believed to be positioning for a 2028 presidential run, went on national television and told the country that Medicare for All and abandoning fossil fuels are no longer fringe positions. They’re mainstream Democrat Party doctrine.
The DSA Candidates Driving This Shift
Nawaz’s question wasn’t hypothetical. The 2026 primary season has seen a string of DSA-aligned candidates topple establishment Democrats in safe blue districts.
Donavan McKinney won his Democratic primary in Michigan, unseating an incumbent. Abdul El-Sayed, who Nawaz noted doesn’t formally identify as DSA but is aligned with the movement, won the Michigan Democratic Senate primary. Chris Rabb won in Pennsylvania. These aren’t protest candidates who lost close races. They won.
And Newsom’s response to all of this was not alarm. It was enthusiasm.
But here’s what Newsom didn’t mention when he was busy calling DSA ideas mainstream. The DSA’s own platform, the one called “Workers Deserve More,” goes considerably further than Medicare for All and green energy mandates. It calls for abolishing the US Senate outright. It proposes replacing the presidency and the Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress. It demands an immediate end to all deportations, free migration between countries without restrictive immigration controls, and extending full voting rights to noncitizens. It calls for government seizure of the largest corporations and the creation of what it describes as a classless society.
That is not a progressive wish list. That is a blueprint for dismantling the constitutional republic the Founders built.
DSA co-chair Megan Romer confirmed every bit of it in a recent Fox News interview. Asked whether the DSA supports abolishing the Senate, Romer answered: “True.” Asked about replacing the presidency and Supreme Court: “Yep.” Asked about abolishing ICE and defunding the Pentagon: “Absolutely.”
Newsom wants credit for embracing the Medicare for All and climate portions of this agenda while hoping nobody looks too closely at the rest of it. That’s not a serious position. That’s a political calculation dressed up as conviction.
What the Medicare for All Admission Actually Means
Government-run healthcare isn’t a compassionate reform. It is a system that rations care, crushes provider choice, and transfers medical decision-making from patients and doctors to federal bureaucracies. Countries that have gone down that road, including Canada and the United Kingdom, have produced documented records of long wait times, shortages, and denial of care. That’s not a talking point. It’s the documented outcome of putting the government in charge of healthcare delivery.
Newsom said “the party does overwhelmingly” support Medicare for All. If that’s true, it means the Democrat Party is committed to a system that would eliminate the private health insurance that more than 160 million Americans currently receive through their employers, force everyone into a single government-run program, and give Washington the power to decide what treatments get covered and what gets denied.
Every dollar taken in taxes to fund that system is a dollar no longer working in the private economy. Every bureaucrat inserted between a patient and a doctor is a barrier to care, not a bridge to it. The people who get hurt worst by government healthcare aren’t the wealthy, who can always find alternatives. It’s the working families who depend on the system they’re given.
And on energy, the math is equally brutal. California, where Newsom has governed, currently charges drivers among the highest gasoline prices in the country. Killing fossil fuels on a national scale doesn’t produce clean energy overnight. It produces higher costs for heating homes, fueling vehicles, and running businesses, costs that fall hardest on the people least able to absorb them. Meanwhile, Communist China and India face no such restrictions on their energy production, meaning American workers and businesses bear the economic pain while global emissions continue unaffected.
The Bigger Picture Newsom Is Selling
Newsom is road-testing a 2028 message. That much is obvious. And the message he’s testing is that the Democrat Party should stop apologizing for its left wing and start running on it openly.
The problem is that what he’s describing isn’t a tent big enough to include working Americans who want affordable energy, affordable healthcare, and a government that enforces its own laws. It’s a tent built around an openly Marxist organization whose platform calls for government seizure of corporations, the abolition of constitutional safeguards, amnesty for every illegal alien regardless of status, and noncitizen voting.
The DSA’s own platform calls for an “immediate end to all deportations.” Newsom is calling those ideas mainstream. That means the man who wants to be president is on record endorsing the ideological framework of a group that wants to end immigration enforcement entirely, strip the Senate of its existence, and hand corporate America over to government control.
None of that is new to the DSA. It is, however, new for a major Democrat politician to sit on national television and say the party is already there, that the distance between Democrat leadership and DSA candidates is about personalities, not ideas.
The historical record of socialist governance isn’t ambiguous. Economic decline, authoritarian drift, the destruction of the middle class. These aren’t predictions. They’re outcomes that have repeated themselves everywhere this model has been tried. Newsom calling those ideas mainstream doesn’t make them wise. It makes the warning label more urgent.
Republican voters gave President Trump a mandate in 2024 to stop exactly this kind of agenda, to enforce the border, to protect American energy, to keep the government out of healthcare decisions, and to hold the constitutional order together. Newsom just confirmed that the opposition party’s answer to that mandate is to run harder in the other direction.
Buckle up. If the 2028 race shapes up as a contest between Trump’s America First agenda and Newsom’s openly DSA-aligned platform, voters will have the clearest choice they’ve had in a generation.
