Kamala Harris Inserts Herself Into the Michigan Senate Race
Kamala Harris looks more and more like a 2028 Presidential candidate every day.
The latest evidence Kamala is prepping a third White House campaign came from the news that she plans to campaign in Michigan with Islamic socialist Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
Michigan is a key swing state, and potential Presidential contenders love to build their name recognition and relationships with voters in battlegrounds by campaigning for down-ballot candidates.
El-Sayed expressed glee at the prospect of Kamala coming to town.
“I’m just really looking forward to having her here, and she is somebody who so many folks in communities like Detroit look up to as an inspirational leader,” El-Sayed said in an interview with POLITICO.
“I’m grateful that she’s coming in and having conversations about what it takes to get the turnout up, so that we can get on to working on some of these issues in the U.S. Senate,” El-Sayed went on to say.
Kamala will appear at a roundtable event on infant mortality in the black community.
“This is an issue she’s been a leader on. It’s an issue I’ve been a leader on,” El-Sayed stated.
“It is critical we flip the Senate so we can bring down prices and stand up to Donald Trump’s corruption,” Kamala spokesman Eduardo Negrón said of the visit.
Why Kamala is Traveling to Michigan and the Risks
El-Sayed, like all socialist candidates in Democrat primaries this cycle, struggled with black voters.
A Washington Post analysis after the primary election found that Hayley Stevens beat El-Sayed by 8 points in the Michigan counties with the highest black populations.
But showing up with Kamala in Michigan carries risks for Democrats.
Dearborn is home to the highest per capita Muslim population of any city in America.
In 2024, Donald Trump actually won Dearborn over Kamla Harris 42-36 percent.
Muslims in Dearborn who normally vote Democrat stayed home or cast a protest vote over Kamala’s support for the war in Gaza.
Polls show El-Sayed holds a narrow lead over Republican Mike Rogers.
This is the kind of race that’s won on the margins.
And Kamala’s unpopularity in Dearborn may offset any boost she could theoretically give El-Sayed with black voters, although that is even up for debate.
Trump won 21 percent of black men in 2024.
That’s a demographic El-Sayed already struggled with and with whom Kamala serves as an anchor.
If Democrats lose in Michigan, there is no path to a Senate majority.
Kamala’s intervention in this race isn’t welcome news for Chuck Schumer.
