Elon Musk just declared war on James Talarico over what the Texas Democrat has said to transgender kids.
Talarico immediately tried to backpedal.
And Musk played his ace in the that brought this fight to a swift end.
Musk Takes Aim at the Democrat Chasing a Texas Senate Seat
Elon Musk lit into Texas state Representative James Talarico (D-TX), the Democrat Party’s nominee for US Senate, in a pair of posts on X.
“Talarico would vote to take away your kids and transition them,” Musk wrote.
Musk paired that post with a video of Talarico talking straight into a camera to a very particular audience.
“To the trans kids watching at home, I just want to say, I love you,” Talarico said in the clip. “I know it may not seem like it tonight, but you are loved beyond measure.”
Musk then went after a second clip. In that one, Talarico declared, “With every border wall, with every bathroom bill, we degrade our reputation and we dishonor our legacy.”
Musk needed only ten words to answer it. “Talarico wants to trans your kids and destroy the border.”
Republicans, led by Talarico’s opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, have hammered the Democrat on gender issues for months. And old tapes keep turning up.
In a 2023 episode of the Superbloom Podcast, host Candice King asked Talarico what he loves besides family and friends. Talarico reached for the issue sitting at the top of his mind.
“I love, I’m just saying this because it’s on my mind, the trans children who showed up yesterday at the state capitol to advocate for their humanity,” he said.
Musk didn’t cite a bill number in his post. He didn’t really need one. Anyone who watched where Musk’s companies went in 2024 knows exactly why this fight hits him where he lives.
The California Law That Sent Musk Packing
In July 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1955. The law bars school districts from requiring staff to tell parents when a child starts identifying as a different gender at school.
And Musk had seen enough. “This is the final straw,” he wrote on X. “Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.”
Minutes later, Musk announced that X would leave San Francisco for Austin. Tesla had already made the same trip in 2021.
Around that time, Musk boiled California’s approach down to a single sentence. “The state will take away your kids in California.”
But this was never an abstract fight for him. Musk has said he got tricked into signing off on puberty blockers for one of his own children, and he has described that child as “killed by the woke mind virus.” Whatever folks think of Musk’s tangled family life, nobody can say he came to this issue cold.
So Texas became his escape hatch. Plenty of other California parents loaded up the moving truck and pointed it east for the same reason.
And now the man asking Texans to send him to the US Senate once called the state’s ban on child gender treatments an act of discrimination.
What Talarico Said Before the Race Got Tight
The bill at the center of it all was SB 14. It bars doctors from giving minors puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or surgery to make their bodies match a gender identity, and it blocks public money for those treatments.
On May 15, 2023, the Texas House passed SB 14 with 87 votes. Talarico joined the 56 members who voted no. The state Senate approved it 31-0, and the law took effect on September 1, 2023.
Talarico didn’t treat it as a close call. He said the bill “is not about science or medicine, and certainly not about keeping kids safe.”
At a Pflugerville Pride legislative panel in August 2023, he dressed up his opposition in parental-rights language. “The reason I oppose that bill is because I trust parents and doctors to make decisions for kids, and not politicians in Austin,” Talarico said.
That line sounds warm and fuzzy. But California already showed the country how fast the Left’s version of “trust parents” shrinks the moment a mom or dad disagrees with the activist down the hall at school.
The record runs back further. In 2021, Talarico called the push to keep boys out of girls’ school sports a “manufactured problem,” then voted against HB 25, which wrote that protection into Texas law. That same year, he told his colleagues in the Texas House, “God is non-binary.”
Talarico’s Conversion Arrived Right on Schedule
But then the race tightened, and Talarico found a fresh set of talking points.
In a September interview with Fox News, Talarico admitted some of his past comments “missed the mark.” He promised he would “absolutely” vote for a national ban on gender surgery for minors.
He also offered this on girls’ sports: “I oppose trans athletes playing in girls’ sports if it endangers safety or fairness.”
Look closely at that “if.” It leaves the door wide open for every school board that decides safety and fairness aren’t on the line in some particular case.
Talarico also insisted, “If you go back and check, I voted for a major amendment to limit the bill to banning surgeries for minors.”
PolitiFact went back and checked. Democrats offered 18 amendments to SB 14, Talarico voted for every one of them, and every one of them failed. And then he voted against the final bill anyway.
In plain English, once Talarico couldn’t get his watered-down version, he voted against the whole thing, puberty blockers and all.
Talarico told Fox that Paxton keeps clipping moments when he “was being a little provocative.” Paxton put it less gently.
“This is just the latest example of Talarico masquerading as a moderate when the truth is he’s the most radical Democrat to ever run statewide in Texas history,” Paxton said.
Democrats have run this play for decades. Joe Biden spent much of his career calling himself personally opposed to abortion while fighting the laws that restricted it. Personal opposition costs a politician nothing. The roll call is what counts.
Musk Puts His Money Where His Posts Are
Musk isn’t just posting, either. Reuters reported that he sent $10 million to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, a group backing Paxton.
That check matters because the Republican establishment has dragged its feet. John Cornyn, who lost the primary to Paxton after President Trump endorsed the challenger, has declined to raise money for him, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s political operation has moved slowly on the kind of television money a red-state seat usually gets.
Democrats handled their own primary upset in Michigan very differently. After Abdul El-Sayed beat Representative Haley Stevens, the leadership’s preferred candidate, Chuck Schumer and the party brass fell in line behind the socialist winner. One party closes ranks around its primary winners. A certain wing of the other holds its wallet shut.
Talarico’s bathroom-bill quote reveals something else, too. He lumped the border wall and the bathroom bill together, as if both embarrass Texas. That’s the modern Democrat agenda in one sentence: wave in the illegal aliens who undercut working Texans’ wages, push gender ideology into the classroom, and scold anybody who objects.
Musk already watched one state slide down that road. He moved his rockets, his social media company, and his car company rather than wait around for the bottom.
And if a Texas Senate seat starts sounding like Sacramento, where does Elon Musk move his rockets next?
