Late-night TV used to be where Americans went to laugh before bed.
Now it’s where one ABC host goes to sneer at women who work for Donald Trump.
And this time the White House fired back with a few words Jimmy Kimmel won’t forget.
Jimmy Kimmel Couldn’t Wait Until Katie Zacharia Said a Single Word
Karoline Leavitt left the White House Press Secretary job in August, and President Trump took his time picking a replacement.
He landed on Katie Zacharia, a former Fox News and Newsmax commentator who graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school in 2011 and spent part of 2026 as a spokesperson at the Department of Homeland Security.
Trump didn’t hold back when he made the announcement. He called Zacharia “a loyal and brilliant supporter, right from the beginning.” She called the job “the honor of a lifetime.”
But Jimmy Kimmel had his material written before she ever stepped behind the podium.
The night before her debut, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host threw a gym selfie of Zacharia up on the screen. Workout clothes, a smile, the whole bit.
“This is the new press secretary, former Newsmax commentator Katie Zacharia, seen here, thinking,” Kimmel said.
He then told his audience her qualifications for the job came down to “blonde hair” and the ability to “do a thumbs up.”
But that was the gentle version.
The ABC Host Went Somewhere Ugly After Her First Briefing
Zacharia’s first briefing ran a tight 14 minutes. She told reporters she wanted to “amplify, multiply and expand upon President Trump’s incredible agenda for the American people,” and she described the President as “his own best spokesperson.”
Trump gave her a thumbs up of his own afterward. “She did very good,” he told reporters as she stood behind him.
Kimmel saw a punch line. A few hours later he walked out on stage and treated a grown woman with a law degree like a child.
“I want to introduce you to the new kid in Trump land. It was the first day of kindergarten for the new White House press secretary, Katie Zacharia,” Kimmel said.
And he kept digging. Kimmel suggested Trump hired her to keep him “awake and interested,” then claimed “every six months they bring in a new fawning blonde dolt to add to the rotation.”
Then came the nickname. “Things did not get off to a great start for Malibu Katie today,” Kimmel told the crowd.
The finale gave the whole game away. “Her first briefing was brief. It was only 14 minutes long. But even in that short time, she accomplished exactly what she was brought in to do, which is slobber a whole tube of lip gloss all over the president’s behind.”
Network television once had standards about that sort of thing. ABC apparently filed them somewhere in the basement next to the old Wide World of Sports reels.
Trump’s Team Refused to Take It Lying Down
Plenty of past administrations would have shrugged and let a comedian have his fun. But Trump’s White House doesn’t operate that way.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle fired back in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Jimmy Kimmel is a no-talent loser who has beclowned himself with tanking ratings and by spewing disgusting lies to his dwindling audience,” Ingle said.
Ingle wasn’t finished. “He is so devoid of actual talent that nobody with any common sense would ever watch him unless it was to laugh at his miserable failures.”
And White House Communications Director Steven Cheung skipped the insults and went to bat for Zacharia instead. “Katie is a fabulous and wonderful addition to the team. She is uniquely qualified and whip-smart to help inform the American people about all the great things President Trump and his administration have been doing, and she will do an incredible job as press secretary,” Cheung told the outlet.
One quick note on that word “dolt.” Zacharia earned a law degree. Kimmel has no public record of ever finishing college. Folks can do the math on who’s short on credentials.
Hollywood’s Feminists Go Quiet When the Target Is a Conservative
Here’s the part nobody at ABC will touch. The same entertainment industry that lectured the country for years about respecting women and tossing out sexist stereotypes just sat back and chuckled while one of its biggest names ran a dumb-blonde routine straight out of 1975.
Imagine a conservative comic calling a Democrat press secretary a “blonde dolt” on national television. The hashtags would trend before the credits rolled. Advertisers would flee. Somebody would demand a congressional hearing.
But Zacharia works for Donald Trump, so the rules don’t apply. Hollywood’s brand of feminism has always come with a party registration requirement.
And this isn’t Kimmel’s first trip off the rails. ABC yanked his show off the air for nearly a week in September 2025 after his monologue about the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and several station groups kept it off their channels even longer.
The broader late-night business tells the rest of the story. CBS announced in July 2025 that it would end The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, calling the move a financial decision. Viewers who want a laugh before bed keep finding other places to get one.
Johnny Carson poked fun at every President who sat in the Oval Office during his three decades on the air. And he never made half of America feel like the butt of the joke. Kimmel seems to think that’s the whole job now.
Katie Zacharia’s Loudest Critic Might End Up Helping Her
Zacharia has plenty of briefings ahead of her, and the press corps will grade each one harder than the last.
But Kimmel may have handed her the best start a new press secretary could ask for. Nothing fires up Trump voters faster than watching a millionaire Hollywood comedian mock somebody for working for the President they elected.
Maybe the jokes will stop once the novelty wears off. Maybe not. Kimmel has been telling some version of the same Trump joke for ten years, and he shows no sign of retiring it.
Expect the White House to keep swinging back every time he takes a shot. The old rule said a President’s team should never punch down at a late-night comic. Trump’s team decided long ago that rule only ever protected the comics.
