Jon Stewart normally delights in taking jabs at Donald Trump.
Plenty of Democrats can’t wait to drag Trump back before House investigators if voters hand them Congress.
But one listener question pulled an answer out of Stewart that Democrat leaders would rather nobody heard.
Stewart Shoots Down the Impeachment Daydream
Stewart closes out episodes of his podcast, The Weekly Show, by taking questions from fans. In an episode released October 7, 2026, the first question asked whether another impeachment push would be a “strategic mistake” for Democrats, given the long odds of ever getting a conviction.
Folks expecting the usual cheerleading from The Daily Show host got something else entirely.
Stewart told his audience the country is in “triage.” He wants Democrats to pour their energy into the economy, specifically into closing the gap between workers scraping by week to week and investors watching their portfolios climb.
“We’ve already shown there’s no accountability. What I want to see is a full government effort on rebalancing this economy,” Stewart said.
Then he went further than most Democrats would ever dare.
“I don’t want to see a f***ing five-act performative play of House hearings. I just don’t want to see it. I don’t want to see everybody having the opportunity to pantomime accountability because you know they’re actually not going to bring it,” Stewart said.
Pantomime. A five-act play. Stewart has built a very comfortable career out of mocking Trump from a television studio, so that’s about as blunt a review of Democrat impeachment theater as anyone is going to get from his side of the aisle.
And Stewart kept going. He said Trump and his team know how to “run out the clock,” which would leave any new round of hearings with nothing to show for the effort.
He even reached for an emergency room comparison, telling the impeachment crowd, “I’m sorry, sir, you’re gonna have to stay in the waiting room because this guy just got shot and it sounds to me like you just have a sore throat.”
The Part Stewart Didn’t Think Through
Nobody should mistake Stewart for a convert.
He spent part of the same answer accusing Trump’s family of corruption and warning that they want to “drain” the country. He offered no evidence on the show to back that up, and no court has found any such thing. Democrats and their media allies have tossed that same accusation around for years. Stewart just added more profanity.
But listen to the reason Stewart gives for skipping impeachment. He points straight at the last two.
“We’ve been in those hearings. If you couldn’t bring accountability to January 6 in two years, what confidence do any of us have that you’re going to be able to untangle Eric and Don’s drone company?” Stewart asked.
Read that one twice. A comedian the Left has treated as a truth-teller for a quarter century just admitted the January 6 impeachment and the House Select Committee that followed it went nowhere. Democrats ran a two-year production, complete with prime-time hearings and a former network news executive shaping the presentation, and Stewart’s verdict is that it flopped.
But he never asks the obvious follow-up question. Maybe the hearings failed because Democrats built the whole exercise to wound Trump politically rather than to find out what happened at the Capitol. Stewart blames Trump for running out the clock. Plenty of Americans would say there was never much of a case for the clock to run out on.
There’s also the double standard nobody on the Left wants to touch. The same politicians and pundits who branded January 6 an “insurrection” spent the summer of 2020 shrugging at Black Lives Matter riots that set American cities on fire. Rioters seized and burned a Minneapolis police precinct. Mobs attacked the federal courthouse in Portland night after night. Property Claim Services, an insurance industry tracker, put insured losses from that summer somewhere between $1 billion and $2 billion, and a big share of that pain landed on small business owners who never got their shops back.
And nobody got a two-year televised committee for any of it.
Trump Answers From the Oval Office
Trump weighed in from the Oval Office the same day the episode came out. He waved off the idea of Democrats impeaching him again and reminded reporters of the restraint he says he showed his political enemies.
“I could have done very bad things to Hillary Clinton. I could have done very, very bad things to Joe Biden. I could have done very bad things to Barack Hussein Obama. I thought it was inappropriate to do so because you have to treat the office of the presidency with respect. Then I found out that they impeached me twice,” Trump said.
And that’s the heart of the whole thing. Trump says he held back out of respect for the office. Democrats answered with two impeachments, a string of prosecutions, and years of investigations that never landed the knockout punch they kept promising.
What Democrats Will Say on the Campaign Trail
Expect plenty of Democrats on the midterm trail to borrow Stewart’s line. Impeachment talk scares off the swing voters they need, and party strategists know it.
But voters have heard this song before. Democrats spent the 2018 campaign insisting impeachment wasn’t on the agenda. After they took the House, they impeached Trump over a phone call with Ukraine in December 2019. They impeached him again in January 2021 over January 6.
So when a Democrat candidate swears impeachment is off the table, the record says to hold onto your wallet.
Stewart, to his credit, at least admits the hearings would be a show. Most of the people who would star in it will never say so out loud.
And if Democrats do grab the gavel, the smart money says the five-act play Stewart dreads opens in the very first season.
