Meghan Markle let the world believe a few staged paparazzi photos tore her family apart.
Her estranged father spent years telling any tabloid that would listen that his famous daughter threw him away.
And Meghan just revealed what her royal bodyguards quietly handed her back in 2018.
Meghan Finally Explains the Cold Shoulder
The Duchess of Sussex put out a statement after her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, accused their father of possessing child sexual abuse images.
Thomas Jr told The Sun he found “hundreds, if not thousands” of explicit images involving children among belongings his father left behind at his former home in the Philippines. According to the Daily Mail, he says the material turned up in four large storage bins, and he reported what he found to police there.
Thomas Markle Sr denies every bit of it. More on that in a moment.
But Meghan’s statement went well past a reaction to the news. It rewrote the official story behind the most famous family feud in royal history.
“In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me,” Meghan said. “It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated.”
And then came the line her publicists clearly sweated over: “I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them.”
She said she “trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families,” called the scope of the allegations “more sickening than one could ever imagine,” and said she hoped “justice will be fully served.”
Nobody faults a mother for keeping Archie and Lilibet away from a man facing an accusation like that. But the timing of this confession raises more questions than it settles.
Eight Years of Tabloid Drama and Not One Word About a Letter
For eight years, the public heard every other explanation under the sun. Thomas Sr posed for staged photos with a paparazzo before the May 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle, then pulled out of the ceremony citing heart trouble.
Meghan sued the publisher of the Mail on Sunday for printing a private letter she wrote to her father, and she won. She sat across from Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and said her father hadn’t told her the truth about his dealings with the tabloids. The Netflix series Harry & Meghan and Prince Harry’s memoir Spare kept the feud on the front burner for years.
Through all of it, the storyline never changed. A ruthless British press. A father who couldn’t stop talking to it.
Now Meghan blames “certain media publications” for distorting the real reason. Maybe they did. But the woman with the biggest megaphone on two continents never once hinted that the real reason sat in a police letter.
Her statement also skips the question most American parents would ask first. The Sussexes have lived in California since 2020, and Thomas Sr is a US citizen who spent much of that stretch living in Rosarito, Mexico. The statement never says whether anyone in Montecito passed those allegations along to American authorities.
The FBI now says it’s aware of the allegations and will “provide support, as appropriate, to the Philippine authorities.” That word from the bureau arrived only after The Sun ran its story.
Thomas Markle Sr Calls the Accusations “Sick Lies”
Thomas Sr moved back to the United States earlier this year, and he came out swinging.
Asked by the Daily Mail whether he ever downloaded such material, he answered, “Never. Never. Never. I have never done that.” He called the accusations “sick lies.”
He also says the timeline falls apart. According to Thomas Sr, he hasn’t had those computers since he left Rosarito with his son in January 2025. “Those computers were boxed up in Mexico and put on a cargo ship which took months to get to the Philippines,” he said.
And he went straight at his son, accusing Thomas Jr of inventing the story for money. He offered to let an expert examine the computer and asked, “How can you accuse a man of something like this with no proof?”
Half-sister Samantha Markle has also denied the allegations against their father. No court has charged Thomas Sr with any crime, and every claim against him remains just that, a claim.
Scotland Yard’s Royal Bodyguards Turned Into the Mailman
Here’s the piece of this story the royal press keeps skating past. The 2018 letter reached Meghan through the Met’s Royalty and Specialist Protection command, the armed unit that guards the royal family, the Prime Minister, and visiting heads of state.
The Met’s own statement sounds like a department still rummaging through its desk drawers. “We are aware of media reports that officers from the Met’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Command were involved in the passing on of a letter in 2018. We are undertaking enquiries internally in an effort to confirm this.”
So Scotland Yard can’t yet say for certain what its own bodyguards did with a letter accusing a man of horrific conduct.
And according to GB News, the Met never investigated Thomas Sr back then and isn’t investigating him now. ITV royal editor Chris Ship says he has seen the letter, and it alleges no crimes on British soil.
So who handed a brand-new duchess those “assurances”? Her statement doesn’t say. The Met hasn’t said either.
Picture a regular family in Alabama in the same spot. An officer hands over a letter accusing Grandpa of something unspeakable, promises somebody’s on it, and then nothing surfaces for the better part of a decade. Most folks would call that a scandal. In London, it rates an internal inquiry.
The Met Has Leaned on the Overseas Excuse Before
But this same command already sits under a microscope. Scotland Yard has opened initial inquiries into protection officers once assigned to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, after an unnamed former senior protection officer told LBC that some officers may have “wilfully turned a blind eye” during trips to Jeffrey Epstein’s private island. The Met said it had “not identified any wrongdoing” so far.
Back in 2016, the Met concluded it couldn’t investigate human trafficking claims tied to Andrew because any probe “would be largely focused on activities and relationships outside the UK.”
Swap in a father living in Mexico, and that logic fits the Markle letter like a glove. Nobody at the Met has said that’s why the letter went nowhere, and it would be unfair to pin that on them without proof. Still, the pattern sure looks familiar.
The Sussexes get a bitter twist of their own here. Prince Harry spent years in British courts fighting to win back that very protection unit after the couple walked away from royal duties, and the Court of Appeal turned him down in May 2025.
Old-school television had a man for a mess like this. Peter Falk’s Columbo would have shuffled into Scotland Yard in that rumpled raincoat, scratched his head, and asked just one more thing: who promised the lady an investigation?
Nobody has answered that one thing yet.
Meghan Markle says she got her assurances in 2018. Scotland Yard is still trying to confirm whether its own officers even delivered the letter.
