Trump Makes the Case to Terminate the Filibuster
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) is allowing Democrats to block the SAVE Act through a filibuster.
Thune has refused to round up the 51 Republican votes to comply with Trump’s call to abolish the filibuster to pass the SAVE Act with a majority vote.
Trump told Republicans that passing the SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship to register to vote, mandates voter ID in every state, and bans mass mail-in voting, is key to securing the election from fraud so Republicans can maintain their majorities in the House and Senate.
The argument Trump put forth was simple: if Republicans didn’t terminate the filibuster now, Chuck Schumer and the Democrats would do it the second they won power, which would allow them to add new Democrat states like Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., entrenching permanent Democrat rule.
“A lot of you don’t know about filibusters. They should terminate the filibuster and approve everything because the Democrats are going to do it! The Democrats are gonna terminate the filibuster as soon as they have a chance. And then they’re gonna approve Puerto Rico and D.C. as a state. They got four more senators. They’re gonna end up with 12 more congressmen. They’re gonna get, like, 40 electoral votes,” Trump told a crowd at a rally.
Trump said if Thune allowed Democrats to be the ones who eliminated the filibuster, he would “cry” while “sitting home.”
“If they are allowed to do that, by that time, I’ll be sitting home, and I’m not a big crier. I don’t think you want to see me cry, you know? There are some people they do very well when they cry, but you don’t want to see me cry. But I may be crying, I’ll be sitting at home, and I’ll say, “I told them,” Trump added.
Trump’s New Request
Trump then told the crowd to call Thune’s office and demand he corral the votes to eliminate the filibuster, as nothing motivates politicians more into action than the prospect of large numbers of angry voters burning up their office phone lines.
“They should terminate the filibuster,” Trump declared. “Everybody call John Thune at the Senate. He’s the leader of the Republican Party, and tell him to get this stuff approved.”
Thune is the leader of a Republican establishment in the Senate that secretly despises President Trump and his voters.
Establishment Republicans like Thune think they can just wait out Trump’s Presidency until 2028 and then steal back control of the party in the Presidential primary by running a candidate to defeat Vice President JD Vance.
And that’s why Thune continues to deny Trump a victory by changing the Senate rules to eliminate the filibuster.
